Kenyah or Kayan Dayak (Kalimantan) - Ceremonial Sword (mandau) and Dagger
- Materials: Sword: steel, brass, antler, horn, human hair, fiber. Dagger: steel, brass, antler, horn, fiber
- Dimensions: Sword: Length: 27 ¼ inches Depth: 3 ¼ inches. Dagger: Length: 15 ¾ inches Depth: 4 1/8 inches
These swords were ornamented extensively. Usually the most striking element is the upper hilt, frequently as here carved of deer antler. These were intended as spirit charms, to work for the wielder and against others.
Elaborate and skillfully smithed blades were attached to the hilts, and all encased in further decorated sheaths. Where retained as heirlooms, these elaborate swords are still a part of men’s ceremonial attire.
On the sword the horn cover is missing from the part of the hilt nearest the blade, with adhering remains of the adhesive, and the longer horn cover is cracked. The fiber cord on the snout is uncoiling.
In the knife there are losses to the upper third of the braided fiber hilt binding, some minor loss and loosening to the rest of this binding, and one very small recent tip loss in the carved handle.

A sword that has a little hat! I love it.
No, seriously, it’s gorgeous. If they made
a replica of this somewhere, I’d buy it.
